This behavior is not specific to XXE. Esc is very different from Ctrl, Alt or Shift. Ctrl, Alt or Shift are modifiers. Esc is a typed key (like F1, F2, Enter, etc). You really need to type Esc Right, Esc Right, Esc Right, as many times as needed to select a range of nodes you. There are of course many other ways to select a range of nodes, including a method which uses the mouse. See http://www.xmlmind.com/xmleditor/tutorial.html#id.s1.4.3.3. And you can always rebind commands to keystrokes other than Esc Left and Esc Right (as of XXE V3, this requires you creating/editing a configuration file).
