A dynamically generated character insertion menu might be quite
useful, and I am grateful to Hussein for instantly having promised it
for V. 2.11.

In the meantime, if you would like to give a static character menu a
try, you can use the configuration that I announced on Sep 14, 2004 in
Vol. 7, Issue 11 of this list, and take it as a starting point for
your own character menu. Just unzip the attached configuration module
and add to your XXE configuration file:

<include location="path/to/charactermenu.incl" />

Hussein's way of entering characters by using the function
insertCharByName is surely also a good thing. The character insertion
menu, however, provides:

- Organization of the characters in groups, so you can easily find the
character you desire instead of having to know its DocBook entity
   name beforehand.

- "Visually controlled" character selection: the character itself is
shown, next to its entity name, in the menu option.

- Keyboard shortcuts "walking you through the menu until the
character", while also allowing use of mouse or arrow keys etc.

- Presentation of only the characters from a logical grouping, while
insertCharByName shows all characters from the DocBook XML named
character entity declarations, corresponding (roughly) to those in
   ISO/IEC DTR 9573 (2003). (See
   http://www.w3.org/2003/entities/overview.html for more info.)

Remarks and suggestions on the character menu are welcome.

Yves
