In a nutshell, with stock DocBook XSL style sheets, books have cover pages, while articles have no cover pages. Therefore, a quick and dirty way to get what you want is to convert your article to a book by hand using XXE+cut&paste or using a text editor or using a simple XSLT style sheet.
