Hi,

while we're at the characters tab :-) : I checked all of XXE's menus as
well as its documentation, but could not find any possibility to select
characters from the Unicode character tab only by using the keyboard.

I appreciate XXE a lot, especially because it may be almost completely
controlled by using the keyboard only. Well, almost... because:

1) To "reliably" move the focus to the characters tab, it seems that a
mouse click is required. It is true that there are some awkward and less
reliable keyboard-only ways to get the focus there. E.g., to move the
focus from the main window to the UCS codepoint editing field, wou might
do something like

Ctrl-F Ctrl-PgDn Ctrl-PgDn Tab (and sometimes one Tab more...)

What's worse: editing the UCS codepoint with number keys won't help you
much, because it seems that after stating the number, you won't be able
to actually insert the desired character! Neither Enter nor Tab nor
Space will allow you to select the corresponding character in the grid,
which though seems to be a prerequisite for insertion.

2) Directly choosing a character from the grid by using the keyboard
would be even more useful than having to know its UCS codepoint, but
obviously you can't push the focus from the codepoint field (or the
arrows at its side) into the grid - see above.

My question to the XMLmind team is: Is there any way to enter Unicode
characters in XXE using the keyboard only? If not, I would like to ask
you to consider this feature as a RFE, which would assure even higher
productivity when using XXE.

The sad consequence of lacking direct keyboard access to the Unciode
character tab is that in order to insert non-keyboard characters in XXE
while refusing to use the mouse, it seems you have to

- either bind them directly to keystrokes (which might be tedious and
confusing when you deal with more than just a few characters)

- or define your own character insertion menus (which are useful in
themselves, of course, allowing you to restrict to the characters you
really need, to arrange them in menus and name the items accordingly).

If someone on the list is interested, I can post an XXE configuration
that adds a menu for the entry of about 200 very common characters
beyond US-ASCII (various latin letters with diacritics and greek
letters, punctuation, arrows, and symbols).
