This is not a bug but a limitation. Automatic language detection by the spell-checker tool is not (yet) implemented. The spell-checker tool allows you to switch on the fly from a dictionary to another. That is, when the English dictionary stops on an unknown French word, simply change the dictionary using the combobox of the spell-checker tool and spell-checking will immediately restart from this French word. Therefore this is not a big limitation if you don't write documents which mix many different languages.
