The APT format is designed exactly for doing that: writing structured 
documents using a plain text editor.

Creating APT documents with XXE is less convincing (because APT tables 
have been designed to be created using a plain text editor). However, we 
wanted to have a demo for the concept of a format plug-in.

We will fix bugs in aptconvert but we do not intend to enhance it.

Aptconvert is OpenSource (LGPL), so you can do it yourself if you have 
the time and need new features badly.
