It's definitely true that XXE does not support command line operations,
but this also makes sense for its purpose as an authoring tool.
Further, the stylesheets that XXE uses to do its conversions (to HTML
and much more) can be used by any XSLT tool. It's a beautiful thing
when products are built on top of open standards that can be leveraged
from a variety of different angles. In this case, look into the DocBook
XSL scripts and investigate a command line XSLT processor such as
xsltproc, Xalan, or others.
