Under the Print tab of the Options menu, one can specify the formatting
of the fields in the header and footer on each page when printing out a
document from XXE. I was wondering if there could be an additional
option for a basename field, which would just print out the last
component of the filename under consideration. For example, given an
absolute path of:
/some/really/long/path/to/a/file.xml
this field (perhaps it could be called "%B") would be replaced with
"file.xml". The reason I ask for this behavior is that some of our
authors have noticed that when printing documents with very long path
names, the end of the path name can actually overflow onto the contents
of the "middle" and "end" areas of content for headers and footers.
An alternative is to elide a portion of the absolute path so that the
path fits within a certain width when printed. A second alternative is
to have the absolute path wrap; this would force the size of the headers
and footers to be somewhat dynamic. These alternatives are actually
better solutions to the problem than the original suggestion because a
long basename would exhibit the same problem. Perhaps the original
request and one of the alternatives could both be incorporated as
features due to this orthogonality.
Take care,
John L. Clark
