Sorry for being so late to answer: I was in vacations for the last 2 weeks.

JadeTeX is basically a SGML tool. I pretty sure it is possible to use it 
on XML files but you need to specify this explicitly using a command 
line option, configuration file or environment variable of JadeTeX (I 
don't know that precisely because I don't use this tool).

PS: Please do not remove the "/" in "/>". By doing this you just get 
non-well-formed XML.
