Unfortunately, the answer is no. XXE is not good at dealing with external entity references (and will never be). The normal behavior is: - When you open a file, the file chooser displays the content of the directory of last edited document. - When you save a new file, the file chooser displays the content of current working directory (on Windows, unless you start XXE using xxe.bat, it is indeed XXE install directory). The strange behavior you describe can be explained if XXE cannot save user preferences when you quit the application: User preferences are stored in: * $HOME/.xxe2/config/preferences.properties on Unix, * C:\winnt\Profiles\<user>\xxe2\config\preferences.properties on Windows NT, * C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\xxe2\config\preferences.properties on Windows 2000.
