There was a technical reason but I don't remember exactly which one. I think that the maximize button of the window behaved properly on Windows (i.e. with the Windows Look and Feel) but not on Linux (i.e. with the Metal Look and Feel). For now, you'll have to use the ``maximize'' button on the tool bar even if we acknowledge that it will not give you the behavior you expect (it will maximize and stack all windows).
