So I suppose I could edit the xxe shell script so that it includes a
dummy document on the command line so that I always start with a
template document. Then my bindings would be available right away. I'm
not sure if this is a good idea or not :-)

Yep. Its working for me. I'd rather not depend on obsure
implementation details, though. Would it be better for me to put these
bindings in a docbook (that is the only application I expect to be
using) customization file instead of the generic customize.xxe?

Thanks!
