This problem is known to be caused by a badly written ATI video driver.
Therefore it may happen on some machines and not on others depending on
the video hardware/video driver the machine has.

For example, we cannot reproduce this problem here (on Windows XP or on
Windows 2000) because we do not have the faulty video hardware/video
driver.

Upgrading your video driver is probably the first thing to do (if you
can do it, otherwise try next step).

This problem was supposed to have a workaround in Java 1.4.1_02 (that's
why we bundle this version). If you have Java 1.4 runtimes on your
machine other that the one bundled with XXE, uninstall them, uninstall
XXE, and then reinstall XXE (if you can do all this, otherwise try next
step).

If problem has not disappeared after this:

[1] Unzip attached laxpatch.zip in <XXE_install_dir> (example C:\Program
Files\XMLmind_XML_Editor).
This will overwrite XMLmind_XML_Editor.lax and xxe.bat by versions of
these files having this additional command line flag:
-Dsun.java2d.noddraw=true which tells Java not to use DirectX for
rendering.

[2] Try to start XXE as usual, using Start menu.

[3] If this does not work (may be because I failed to properly patch
XMLmind_XML_Editor.lax), try to start XXE using xxe.bat (for example, by
double-clicking on xxe.bat).

If problem has not disappeared after this and you are still motivated to
solve it, completely uninstall Java 1.4.1_02, uninstall XXE and then
install Java 1.4.2 Beta (downloaded from
http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/download.html) and
xxe-std-23p1-setup-nojvm.exe (downloaded from
http://www.xmlmind.net/xmleditor/_download/xxe-std-23p1-setup-nojvm.exe).

If you manage to solve this problem, please tell us how you did it.
