Sorry but I don't know.

Note that there is no known problem similar to the one you have reported 
on the Mac (or on any other platform).

Please, try this:

[1] Select menu item Options|Options.

[2] Select the Schema tab.

[3] In the DTD catalogs frame, click on the Reset button.

[4] Restart XXE and try to create/open a document.

Also note that we have modified XXE to make it open/create documents 
even when an XML catalog file is corrupted. Therefore if the above 
attempt fails, retry after upgrading to XXE V2.5p1 (not yet released).
