Managed entities are expanded in the document view of the master document, so you can check the cross-references, print the whole document, convert the whole document, etc. You can modify anything in the master document except included external entities which have been marked read-only (displayed with a light gray background among other visual hints). When you save a modified master document, the XML file contains references to the external entities, not their replacement texts (that's why they are called ``managed'').
