This happens for all characters that cannot be represented in
ISO-8859-1.

It will not happen if you use an encoding which can represent the whole
Unicode char set, such as UTF-8. Unfortunately using UTF-8 makes the XML
saved by XXE pretty unreadable in spanish (at the XML source level).

Therefore, I have no perfect solution for you...
