What a horrible bug! I'm confused. I can't explain how it has escaped from us... It happens with Java 1.4 (even 1.4.01) on Windows but not on Linux with mwm as a window manager (???). Many XXE problems are related to Java 1.4 so using XXE M1.x with Java 1.3.1 may be a temporary solution for you. Note that you do not have to give up using Java 1.4 for other applications: http://www.xmlmind.net/xmleditor/_download/xxe-m13p3-setup.exe includes its own private Java 1.3.1 runtime.
