Thanks for the reply, but no image was attached.

I selected the first entry at the top of the left column and ctrl-up
arrow to highlight the whole column box, then insert-before, but only
had 'entry' related attrubutes available in the list and no colwidth
attributes (see attached). 

I checked my version and I am on xxe-pro-3_8_0

colspec is an element (you can see that in the screen shots I've sent
you)

[1] Click in the first cell of the table.

[2] Select its tbody or thead ancestor using the node path (or press
Ctrl-Up repeatedly).

[3] Use "Insert Before".

[4] Select colspec from the list.

[5] A colspec element is inserted before the tbody (or thead) and should
be already selected (red border around it).

[6] Using the Attribute tool, specify colwidth="2in".

You never need to do this. This would be very error prone.
