I'm not sure what you mean by "the format". But there are several tools
available that claim to convert Microsoft Word into DocBook files. I
used a demo version of one several years ago to convert a single file.
It seemed to work reasonably well, although to show that it was a demo
(and encourage you to buy the real thing) it inserted some spurious
characters, which we had to edit out.

I believe a web search will show several such products. I'm sure none
of them is perfect, since Word is at best a formatting markup program,
whereas DocBook is a content markup format. Thus, there's no way the
converter can know why you used this or that paragraph format, or why
you used italics, or that something is a bibliography entry (as opposed,
say, to someone's snail mail address). But if you're doing one-time
conversion of a small number of files, and can put up with some
post-editing, you may be satisfied with what you find.

(I can imagine that if you used special styles for things like
bibliography entries, for example, then some converter program *might*
allow you to specify that paragraphs in that style should be converted
into DocBook biblio entries. I don't say that there is such a program,
and it would still leave you needing to convert the sub-parts of such
paragraphs by hand.)
