The Character tool uses the *logical* Java[m] font called "Serif".

This logical font, which needs to be usable for the whole Unicode basic
plane = 65535 characters, is mapped to a number of native, physical,
fonts (e.g. on Windows: Arial, Dingbats, ...).

This mapping is platform dependant and sometimes, there are character
ranges for which there is no suitable native physical fonts.

Let's say that on the Mac, the mapping is more comprehensive than on
Windows.
