It didn't work on mine, until I renamed XMLmind's preferences.properties
file in my "home" directory (C:\Documents and
Settings\maxwell\Application Data\XMLmind\XMLEditor\), which caused
XMLmind to create a new preferences.properties file. Turns out that I
had reset the SansSerif font in XMLmind to be Arial somewhere in the
process of debugging this problem (and I had reset my Serif font to
Times New Roman, but I doubt that was the problem). Because I had told
XMLmind to use the Arial font for the sansSerifFontFamily, the changes
we made to Java's fontconfig.properties file (in C:\Program
Files\Java\jre1.5.0_02\lib\) had no effect.

So I changed the line in my original preferences.properties file back to
    sansSerifFontFamily=SansSerif
and everything works now. Thanks for helping me track this down!
