--> Your question is not directly related to XMLmind XML Editor. It is
more a question about DocBook and its XSL stylesheets
(http://www.sagehill.net/docbookxsl/).

--> ANSWER: You cannot do that without customizing the DocBook XSL
stylesheets.

The first pages are always generated when you convert a DocBook <book>
to PDF, RTF, etc. These first pages are intented to contain useful info.

For example, take a look at the first pages of our User's Guide:
http://www.xmlmind.com/xmleditor/_distrib/doc/user/userguide.pdf

Note that our User's Guide starts with a <bookinfo> element:

---
<bookinfo>

   </affiliation>
 </author>

 <pubdate>April 23, 2007</pubdate>

 <abstract>
   <para>This document is essentially a tutorial for XMLmind XML Editor
   (XXE for short). It also contains installation
   instructions for Unix and information about
   the content of the distribution.</para>
 </abstract>
</bookinfo>

and not just with a <title> element.

--> TIP: If instead of writing a DocBook <book>s, you write DocBook
<article>s, you'll get no ``almost empty'' pages at the beginning of
your PDF.
