I currently use the free edition of XMLMind's XMLEditor for my thesis and am very pleased with the mixture of a visual editor which at the same time offers full access to the underlying XML-structure in a mostly intuitive way.
Here's a small feature request that would make working with the editor across sessions easier: Restore the entire last session upon next start, that is with all documents (Tabs) and cursor positions. This may seem like a small detail, but it makes a big difference when writing complex documents which contain multiple parts (e.g., chapters).
