I would like to know if, when blocked this way, waiting up to 5 minutes
(e.g. waiting for an X11 or a network *timeout*) temporarily restores
the normal functioning of XMLmind XML Editor.

I don't see what's in 3.5.1 or in 3.5.2 which could cause such problems.
Therefore, I suspect that downgrading to 3.5.0 will *not* fix the problem.

This problem is almost certainly a Java[tm] one and not an XXE one. This
problem is almost certainly triggered by something in your working
environment. I'm saying this because XXE is developed on Linux and yours
truly uses it on SuSE 9.0, 9.3 and 10.2 all the time without any problem.

I would recommend to install another version of Sun's Java. For example,
if you currently use Java 1.5, consider upgrading to Java 1.6.0_01
(latest version) or, on the contrary, downgrading to Java 1.4.2.
