Do you want to customize the CSS style sheet (used to render DocBook
documents on screen) to make it closer to the XSL style sheet (used to
convert DocBook documents to HTML)?

The anwser is generally: "yes, to a certain extent".

Customizing the CSS style sheet used for DocBook documents is explained

But I'm affraid that this means a lot of work (learning CSS and
understanding how XXE is configured) for a very little benefit. Unlike
our respectable competitor "Syntext Serna"
http://www.syntext.com/products/serna/index.htm , XXE has not been not
designed to be WYSIWYG.
