Thank you for your quick response.  I was already looking at an XSLT 
workaround and have gotten it to work.  However, it seems a shame that a 
perfectly fine XML feature like entities cannot effectively be used with 
what is otherwise a great XML editor.  Now we'll have to tell our document 
writers not just about DocBook but also about XSLT, if they want to use 
entities and XXE.  Perhaps you could mention your two solutions at 
http://www.xmlmind.com/xmleditor/limitations.html.

You can use XInclude for this purpose. Using XInclude + XPointer you can
include just small fragments of XML not the whole referenced file. It is
also possible to solve this problem on XSLT level. For example, in your
document you can write <replace>productversion</replace> and then write
simple XSLT which will replace such element with a proper value for
productversion.
