My apologies for not looking in my email files first, because I just
found the solution buried there in a message from 7/11/2008. (See below
if you, too, want to know the answer.)

I did go to the archive page, but since one has to search month-by-month
I decided to ask the list. Is there any way to do a search across the
archive without having to do it month-by-month? If so, that would have
saved me (and you all) some time.

Please use a text editor to delete words in
XXE_user_preferences_dir/spell/dict_LL.txt (where LL is the language code).

XXE_user_preferences_dir is ~/.xxe/ on Unix and
%APPDATA%\XMLmind\XMLEditor\ on Windows.

Example, my ~/.xxe/spell/dict_en.txt looks like this:
---
DocBook
JEuclid
MathML
XMLmind
XPath
XQuery
XSL-FO
checkbox
metadata
namespace
Pixware
Qizx
redistributable
screenshots
stylesheet
stylesheets
XFC
XXE
