OTOH, it is quite easy to suppress section labeling everywhere, but of
course, keep part, chapter, appendix labeled.

This is done by setting the "section.autolabel" XSLT stylesheet
parameter to "0".

Procedure:

[1] Open your document.

[2] Select "Options|Customize Configuration|Change Document Conversion
Parameters".

[3] Select a group of parameter using the combobox. For Example:
"Converter to PDF, PostScript"

[4] Click Add.

[5] Type:
---
section.autolabel
---
then:
---
0
---
as shown in the attached screenshot.

[6] Click OK twice.

Then repeat [3] to [6] for all the formats you'll target in our
deliverables.

--> Suppressing section labeling just inside a preface is possible, but
requires creating a customization of the stock DocBook configuration.

Sorry but telling you how exactly this can be done is out of the scope
of this mailing list. More information in this FAQ: How do I customize
the HTML, PDF, RTF, etc, generated using the "Convert Document" menu? --
