Thank you so much for your prompt reply.

You're absolutely right, of course - it would be terrific if I had the
opportunity to learn this product better. But it's a large doc set with lots
of pieces, and this isn't the only tool in use...so still need to learn
more.

So, the first circumstance is what's preventing me from performing this task
successfully. I'm trying to insert the variable into a docbook para. (I must
take a moment to say that your tutorial documentation does not make it all
clear that you cannot do this, although I suppose it should have been
obvious.)

But more importantly - I still need to be able to create "variables" inside
my docbook XML documents that can be easily replaced for fast product and
company name changes. Is there a way I can do this? Additional search of the
documentation doesn't find anything.

As always, thank you very much for your help!

Best regards,
Sharon

XMLmind XML Editor does not work like a word processor or like any other
XML editor. We recommend that you take the time to get acquainted with
it and this, even if you need to complete the above task within a week.

What you'll learn will apply to *all* document types: XHTML, DocBook,
DITA, proprietary vocabulary, etc.

For example, you really need to understand how the selection works (text
selection and node selection, implicit selection and explicit
selection), the difference betwen "Insert Into", Insert Before", "Insert
After", etc.

All commands are *highly* *contextual* in XMLmind XML Editor. If you
don't see it, then it means: you cannot do it given the current selection.

Selecting VATrates.html into the Include tool allows to choose an XHTML
span element by its id in order to insert it in the document being edited.

Therefore nothing will be listed by the Include tool in the following
three cases:

[1] The document being edited is not a XHTML document. For example, you
attempt to insert an XHTML span into a DocBook para.

[2] You have implicitly (caret inside it) or explicitly (red box around
it) selected the wrong element. For example, you may not insert a span
in a head/title.

[3] You are using "Insert Reference Into" instead of "Insert Reference
Before" or "Insert Reference After".

If you open or create an XHTML document and simply click inside a p (no
red box around it), you should be able to see elements listed in the
Include tool.

Your screenshot shows the Include tool, therefore v3.6.2 supports this
feature.
