Sorry, I had my collapsers in the wrong places (and I already wondered why they
were appearing so "blurred" when collapsed :-) ). Now I have changed their
position like so:

book {
display: block;
collapsible: yes;
collapsed: no;
not-collapsible-head: 0;
}
book:before {
content: collapser() " " label(xpath, "part[1]/*[1]");
}
---
and everything works perfectly.
Thank you very much for having spent the time to investigate the issue and to
explain the details to me.
Just one question related to the label() issue: How would I need to modify the
above so that the content of book:before only shows when <book> is collapsed?
