I think I will go the way of configuring XXE to use another font for Tree view, 
hoping to find some font which will do better with U+2009.

Well, if "incorrect" only meant that Java displays a distance too small or too 
large, that wouldn't hurt much. The point is that in this case XXE (like 
probably any other Java-based application) is made to behave as if the 
character had completely disappeared: neither stepping over the character nor 
selecting it is possible.

At least it is good to know that XXE is not the culprit.
