My answer assumes that you are using XMLmind XML Editor to author 
DocBook documents.

[1] Use an image editor such as Photoshop or The Gimp and make sure that 
the image resolution (AKA Print Size) is realistic. The image resolution 
is often set to 72dpi which gives images which are much too large in print.

[2] Adjust the width of the image if needed to, by specifying an 
absolute value (e.g. 10cm) for the contentwidth attribute of the 
imagedata DocBook element.
