This is the correct behavior. We didn't implement the behavior you describe because it is deemed to be intrusive.

Note that you don't need click on a different element to have the incorrect word underlined. Suffice to type a space or a punctuation nearby.

In practice, the on-the-fly spell checker XMLmind XML Editor behaves sensibly. FYI, you are the first customer in many years who complains about "editing text to make it incorrect does not underline it immediately".
