I've downloaded and started using XMLMIND 5.5.

In 5.4 and earlier, it was possible to select the formatting tag in the
bar above, for example section, and Control click to add a new element
below; and select and Shift click to add a new element above. This was
very useful when adding another item in an itemized list, adding a new
section, etc.

Yes that's right, but that are many other ways to achieve this. See below.

This doesn't seem to be part of 5.5. There must be a workaround. Could
you kindly point me to the area with instructions?

[ The following keyboard shortcuts are found in our "Quick reference card". See for example: http://www.xmlmind.com/xmleditor/_distrib/doc/quickrefcard/quickrefcard-A4.pdf ]

* Works inside a list item (or paragraph or a few other kinds of ``blocks''), without the need to select anything:

- Press ENTER at the very end of the list item to append another list item.

- Press ENTER at the very beginning of the list item to prepend another list item.

- Press Ctrl-ENTER anywhere inside the list item to append another list item.

- Press Ctrl+Shift-ENTER anywhere inside the list item to prepend another list item.

* Works for any element explicitly selected (e.g. chapter, section, etc):

- Press Ctrl-INSERT to insert same element after selected element.

- Press Ctrl+Shift-INSERT to insert same element before selected element.
