I thought I'd be wanting to check the XML source all the time when I started <g> but in fact, no! the only exception is when I prepare some DITA files outside XXE and they won't validate; then I'll adjust them in Notepad++ or gVim. Bear in mind I started off in an 80-char green on black environment ... so I was expecting to be a diehard. Far from it - I'm truly comfortable with the XXE interface. Go on, give it a try.
