I'm saying this in case you are not really interested in editing DocBook
in XMLmind XML Editor.
I have created a word doc that has embedded VISO drawings and
excel spreadsheets. The conversion works very well. The only negative
point I see is that the resolution of the drawings for both VISIO and
EXCEL source elements in the output is very low. The conversion process
creates *.png files for each source element. These *.png files are of
low quality.

No. There is currently no way to increase the quality of the images
representing embedded VISIO drawings and embedded EXCEL spreadsheets.
These images are NOT created by XMLmind Word To XML image converters
(that is, like EMF or WMF images which are converted to PNG or SVG by
the means of image converters).
These images are created by MS-Word itself and stored in the DOCX file
as an alternative, simple, universal, representation of the embedded
vector graphics/embedded object.
