I ran into the same need a while back.

I did get a file transfer to work with an XMLRPC transaction using a byte[], 
but there are obvious limitations with that approach.

I ended up going outside of XMLRPC and using the Jakarta FileUpload project for 
file uploads and sticking to XMLRPC for simpler transactions.
