I guess I didn't do my homework before posting: it seems I have to tell openssl where 
the file is by setting RANDFILE env variable - I'll do that & see if intializes ok 
tomorrow morning. If you don't hear from me then it's working...

You might want to write your own initialization function
for openssl. Take a look at xmlSecOpenSSLAppInit() in
src/openssl/app.c for sceleton.
