(Haven't checked Ubuntu yet.) Ok. Worked it out.
With the args I use (--sign --print-debug --privkey-der pk.der --output sign.xml vstsout.xml) the sign function calls xmlDocDump. In 1.2.16 this crashes. I've seen this in some of my other test programs. I modified the xmlsec.c source to replace it with xmlDocDumpMemory and saved the contents myself to the file with fwrite. It all works.
