Hi, my name is Nuno Cardoso and I'd like to "Effect chain clean-up and
crossfade plug-in" project under GSoC'10.

Now answering the application form:

> Have you contacted an XMMS2 mentor (use IRC or soc2...@xmms.se) and discussed
> the project already? Note that we won't read the application until you answer
> YES on this question.
I'm trying to.

> Have you read and understood the rules and requirements?
Yes.

> What are you studying, subject, level and school?
I'm a student at Faculdade de Engenharia da Universidade do Porto,
Portugal and my course is "Master in Informatics and Computing
Engineering"(https://www.fe.up.pt/si_uk/cursos_geral.formview?p_cur_sigla=MIEIC)
and I'm in the fourth year.

> What programs/software have you worked on before?

> Have you developed software in a team environment before? (As opposed to
> hacking on something on your own)
Yes. Right now I'm the Project leader and main developer of a course
called "Project Management Laboratory". In this course each team(mine
has 13 people) has to develop some application to a real world client.

> Are you already involved with any open source development? If yes, please
> describe the project and the scope of your involvement.
I've contributed to moc(http://moc.daper.net/) but I wasn't having
feedback from the main developer.
I've made a small application to allow someone with a joystick to
associate key bindings with shell commands.

> Have you participated to the Google Summer of Code before? As a mentor or a
> student? In what project? Were you successful? If not, why?
No.

> Describe what you consider your three main shortcomings (relevant to GSoC)
> and how you cope with them.
I tend to become overwhelmed when I need to learn lots of new things
in a short period because I get afraid to fail. When this happens I
try to continue researching and not being affected by that.
I'm to much of a perfectionist and sometimes I get frustrated because
I'm not able to reach my idea of what's a good job.

> Describe what you consider your three main strengths (relevant to GSoC) and
> how they show in previous projects of yours.
I try to make software as well structured. as I can and I take great
efforts in achieving that.
I am a self learner and I have a great sense of autonomy.
I am faithful to my commitments.

> Why did you choose this project?
I am very interested in this project because I love the open source
concept and in this particular case I think that xmms2 is an
application with lots of potential.

> Include a timeline for your work on the project

> Include as much technical detail about your implementation as you can
> What do you expect to gain from this project?
I always wanted to integrate some open source project but I never
actually did it.
>From this project I expect to be able to participate in the
development of xmms2 and gain more team working skills. I also expect
to improve my skills in a non-academic reality.

> What would make you stay in the xmms2-community after the conclusion of SOC?
I think that if I succeed I'll stay in xmms2 community afterward.

* Practically

> Are you familiar with any of the following tools?
>> git
yes

>>waf
Just from compiling xmms2.

> Which tools do you normally use for development? Why do you use them?
-Vim, because it's the best editor :)
-GNU Screen
-Some VCS(mainly svn or git)

> What development model would you use (e.g. keywords: V-model, XP programming,
> agile programming, iterative; with the help of prototyping, formal
> specifications, tests, etc).

> What programming languages are you fluent in?
C/C++, Java, PHP

> What spoken languages are you fluent in?
Portuguese, English and French.

> At what hours are you awake (please specify in UTC)
9:00 am.

> Would you mind talking with your mentor on telephone / internet phone?
No.

> Will you be available full summer, or do you still have
> lectures/exams/whatever when GSoC starts? Are you planning on some vacation
> (when you won't be coding on GSoC project) during the summer?
I'll have classes until 23 July. Afterward I'll have full
availability. While having classes I'll have a very good amount of
time to work on GSoC.

Best Regards

Nuno Cardoso
