Not sure whether XMMS2 has a software volume control, but you could probably use the ALSA softvol plugin to do it: http://alsa.opensrc.org/Softvol This creates a separate PCM device with its own volume control, so you set one XMMS2 instance to play to that device and use its volume control, and then XMMS2 thinks it's controlling a hardware mixer but really it won't affect the volume of anything else.
