I've upgraded my xserver to 46eeaf82e228df1c5971a24dc815566516e19be9, and now Mozilla Thunderbird has display problems (omits some parts). Maybe that's too aggressive.
FWIW, I've implemented a similar system where region ops had a context, allowing them to either grow or shrink resulting regions (or neither, of coz) to achieve simpler representations. This allows to suppress such stuff in the first place.
