Here's another strange bug, also found during TigerVNC Xvnc testing. On Ubuntu 9.04 beta[*], after starting GNOME, Xvnc consumes all CPU it can get.

I've found http://cgit.freedesktop.org/xorg/xserver/commit/?id=1f4fb0225b278d1cf4145aebeb0bdd23dc8f62d5 now, and the bugs that it references. The Fedora patch xserver-1.5.3-idletime-fix.patch solved my problem.

However, this fix is only on the 1.6 branch and trunk. Why not on the 1.5 branch? IMHO, it's quite a major bug if the server consumes 100% of the CPU whenever running with GNOME 2.25.X.
