Okay - I didn't read far enough down the man page - I stopped at the
DESCRIPTION line that says:
By default, pkg-config looks in
the directory /usr/lib/pkgconfig for these files. It also
looks in the colon-separated list of directories specified
by the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable.
and didn't see the text you quoted in the detailed description of
environment variables. I've got no objections to it then.
