Ah, Peter emailed me about reverting this commit. I didn't realize it
hadn't been reverted for master as well as 1.7 branch. Feel free to
revert it.

The fix proposed here is a subset of reverting commit
5ef53a94ce4e48e11de26290cd677266308640c8, so a revert of it will fix
both.

I'll be doing alpha fixes in a personal repo in the future.

that breaks dense systems. Plus, this commit was present in
xserver-1.5 which is confirmed as working on alpha.
