Sorry, I misread the patch -- the checks are still there, but 'hidden'
as they were the only unchanged lines.

Looks good to me. I'm going to merge this patch unless I get complaints
From someone who needs to replace the allocator and is running on a
system which cannot manage to override malloc/free/....
