On a cursory glance this seems to be something that would be fixed by
the use of bitmasked valuators (instead of ranges). I posted a first
version of the patch to the list a few weeks ago, I just haven't gotten
around to fixing it up yet due to other work. Hopefully I can return to
it soon.

Of course, they won't go into xserver 1.9, so these fixes probably still
are needed for now.
