In any case, I reviewed the patches and they look fine to me, plus I
hadn't merged anything else into the tree before trying to merge this,
so it worked out fine.

Sorry. I'm afraid the particular git repo I was working in had a remote
pointing at the master repo from back when commits to master were allowed.
Needless to say, I have removed that remote now.
