I'm not sure I'd call it much of a design document, but I try to put a coherent stream of words into lyx this morning, the result is at http://people.freedesktop.org/~airlied/xredesign.pdf The src will appears in my personal git repos soon. There is a lot of gaps in that document but I'm hoping it'll at least be enough for people to propose questions. I've got about 5-6 hacked up trees here with various forays into pieces of it all.
