I've seen this a few times now, it's pretty dramatic.  (And for bonus
points, if you rmmod/modprobe bcm5974, gnome-shell crashes.)

I was planning to take a look at this over the weekend or next week,
but given that my laptop was stolen last night, I don't think I'll get
to it for a little bit ...
